Dr. Ghulam Ali Asghar
Dr. G.A. Asghar was born on the 16th of July 1912 in Faisalabad (Lyallpur). In 1941, he joined the British army. During World War II, his duty required him to deal with patients suffering from depression as well as psychosis. His determination to serve these people landed him a posting in the British Field of Psychiatric Unit.
By 1944, he had been transferred to a 1000-bedded hospital in Bangalore as a psychiatrist and was later appointed as the head of the psychiatry department in a well-known hospital in Sikandarabad. Following the separation of India and Pakistan, he served in different hospitals until 1954 when he settled in London for higher studies.
After completing Fellowship at the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), he was appointed as the Deputy Medical Superintendent in 1957 at Lahore Mental Hospital. Two years later he took charge of Giddu Bandar Mental Hospital in Hyderabad in the same position where he served for six years before retiring in 1964. Following his retirement, he shifted to Karachi where he built the Nerves Health Center at Nazimabad No. 4 with the collaboration of Habib Trust.
Dr. G.A. Asghar spent most of his life on the betterment of patients with mental disorders and addiction. To support the same cause, he established the Mental Disorder Relief Society of Karachi, Pakistan in 1965. With undying efforts and zeal, he also laid the foundations of Asghar Hospital in 1965. This establishment has been distinctive in the field of psychology and is going up by leaps and bounds.
